Bi-folding doors with added marine protection
When looking to retire, Mr & Mrs Wagner found the ideal spot on the Isle of Lewis where they could build their perfect home in keeping with the island’s architecture and low carbon footprint.
A wood frame construction was chosen for the house - standard for the island - along with a number of heavily researched products to ensure energy and environmental efficiency wherever possible. With such beautiful views and scenery, bi folding doors were a must for the project to open up the dining area to the outside views and patio area.
Just 300 metres from the sea, the doors would be exposed to a saline environment and high winds so making the right choice of materials was paramount. A three panel SFK82 bi folding door system was chosen complete with marine treatment for protection against corrosion.
The SFK82 is a combination of aluminium cladding to the outside and timber interior. The aluminium framed exterior was then treated through a specialist process that increases the bond between the colour powder coating and the frames. Mechanisms are also protected to ensure longevity of the complete system.
Mr Wagner commented on the doors once installed: “The stunning uninterrupted view is just what we wanted, and especially the case when the doors are fully opened. But even when they are closed the doors flood the room with light and also ensure reduced heat loss as a result of quality craftsmanship through the construction of the doors and frame. When the weather is inclement, and in the dark winter days, they provide a gracious and comfortable living environment, allowing us to view the beauty of nature in comfort.”
